Minor children accompaning parent into opposite sex change room |

The ARI has recently been asked what is its position on what age is still classed as a minor and therefore able to enter a Change Room of the opposite sex accompanied by a parent/guardian. At present there is no official policy on this matter and each aquatic facility must determine for itself how this matter is to be handled. In addition the ARI has contacted RLSSA and below is a brief response.
Royal Life Saving has produced a small document called “How to Use Public Pools”. It has primarily been developed to assist CALD groups. Within this document the following is included:
"Once you are inside the centre, you can visit the change rooms to get ready for your swim. There will be separate change rooms for males and females. Toilets and showers can also be part of the change room or they may be separate. Showering before entering the pool is a great way to help keep the pool clean, which is why many pools request you have a quick shower before entering their pool. If you have children accompanying you to the change room, most facilities have a rule that if the child is aged under seven years they can go into the change room with an adult whatever their gender. Once the children are over seven years of age they have to visit either the male or female change room."
If you require any additional information please do not hesitate to contact the ARI Office on 02 9804 1720 or email your enquiry via the Contact Us form on this site.
