What is the ARI?
The Aquatic and Recreation Institute (ARI) is a not-for-profit professional association of Aquatic and Recreation practitioners, which includes Recreation Facility Managers, Industry Specialists, Community Recreation Providers and decision makers and Recreation Organisations.
We provide support, direction, training, information and networking opportunities for all members who are involved in sport and leisure services throughout Australia.

What is the Purpose of the ARI?
The ARI is committed to the following principals:
  • To provide a professional body for the leisure industry workers which fosters personal and professional growth and development through training programmes and networking
  • To develop and strengthen networks between individuals, suppliers and professional associations involved in the provision of leisure
  • To represent the leisure industry by making submissions on issues of recreational policy that affect the provision and development of leisure resources
  • Encourage efficient effective and socially equitable management of leisure resources
  • Assist in establishing guidelines for leisure opportunities for local communities
  • To provide support to leisure professionals in their delivery of quality leisure services
  • Representation on Industry Boards and Committees
In keeping with these principles the ARI has developed an Alliance of industry based organisations around Australia. These are specifically:

  • Aquatic and Recreation Institute - NSW
  • Recreation South Australia (RecSA)
  • Aquatic and Recreation Institute - Queensland
  • Aquatic and Recreation Institute - Tasmania
  • Leisure Institute of WA (Aquatics)
  • Aquatics and Recreation Victoria
  • Royal Life Saving Society
In addition we work closely with AustSwim and Swimming Australia on many community initiatives.

The ARI is seen by a number of organisations and government agencies as the voice for the industry. This is evidenced by the following:

National

  • Representation on the National Water Safety Council
  • Consultation for the review of the National Community Recreation Training Package by Service Skills Australia
  • AustSwim recognition of conference and other professional development programs with CPD points awarded for attendance
NSW
  • Representation on the NSW Water Safety Advisory Council
  • Representation on the NSW Sport and Recreation Industry Standing Committee
  • Links with Dept of Local Government, development and review of Practice Note 15
  • Links with Dept of Health, approached for consultation of review of health standards
Queensland

  • Increased awareness of ARI with various stakeholders
  • Alliance with National Swimming Pool Institute and SPASA
  • Successful review of Qld operational guidelines held by RLSSQ
  • Consultation on development of state competencies for water quality training
  • Implementation of cross-training of individuals from various centres to facilitate greater understanding of facility operations
  • Links with Dept of Sport and Recreation
South Australia

  • Greater government recognition in SA including links with Dept of Health
  • Engagement by individuals making a more solid committee
  • Appointed to SA Water Safety Coordinating Committee
  • Awarded a grant of $4400 from the SA Dept of Sport & Recreation
Tasmania

  • Formation of a state branch in 2006 after 8 years of development
  • Representation on Tasmania Water Safety Council
  • Leading the development of state wide water safety campaign
  • Links with Dept of Sport and Recreation and Dept of Local Government
  • Strengthening ties with RLSST, SLSA (Surf Life Saving) Tas, AustSwim and MAST (Marine and Safety Tasmania)
International

  • Strategic partnership and magazine article sharing with ISRM UK
  • Conference delegate exchange program with ISRM UK
The ARI recognise the need to review and enhance the industry on a national basis and are committed to raising the voice at all levels for the betterment of the aquatic and recreation industry as a whole.
